The bird I just got from you is screaming! What do I do?
When you buy a bird it is very important to remember that it is a very stressful time for them. They have lost all their “nest mates”, are with strange people they have never met before, in a strange place and have been travelling in a car for X long. We encourage people to give their new bird some quiet time to settle down. When bringing home your new bird, ensure that their cage is in a quiet part of the house, that they aren’t crowded by everyone and it also helps to cover their cage to give them a feeling of security. Give them a couple of days to get use to their new environment before trying to encourage them out of the cage. For the first few times, don’t put your hand in the cage to try and bring them out, just open the door and give them the choice to come out. This helps prevent the bird from associating your hand with being “bad”
What method of hand feeding do you use?
Typically we syringe feed all our birds. If they are having difficulties or refuse that method we then try feeding them by spoon. As an absolute last resort we would crop feed to prevent sickness/weight loss/death but touch wood, at this point in time we have not had to feed any bird this way.
What type of formula do you use?
We use Vetafarm Neocare and always ensure it is the correct temperature of 38-40 degrees before feeding to prevent crop burn or sour crop.
Do you sell your birds unweaned to help with bonding to the new owner?
No we do not. All birds will be weaned and eating well before they will be sold. An inexperienced person may not have a full understanding of how to hand raise and it could result in stunted growth, illness or worse… death. If possible, we rehome our birds shortly after weaning to help with bonding.
How do you keep your birds while they are getting hand reared?
Up until the time that they have advanced feathering, they are kept in a brooder. Once feathers cover most of their body they are moved to a new container that has a heat pad at one end that they can move towards or away from. Once they start fledging and moving towards weaning, they are then moved to a cage and provided with a variety of different types of food to start trying.
What do you wean your birds onto?
All our birds are weaned onto seed, pellets and fresh fruit and vegetables.
