It’s an exciting time, you just bought your first hand raised companion parrot! You’ve got them home and into their new aviary or cage and they are settling into their new environment nicely. You’ve offered them a quality mix of bird seed and pellets and are now wondering “what is safe for me to feed my birds?”.
To ensure your bird lives a long, happy and healthy life, it’s important that you offer them a varied diet. While we are not vets or offering any formal advice, we feed our birds with a diet breakup consisting of:
- 50% Pellets
- 20% Seed
- 20% Fresh Vegetables
- 10% Fruit (high in sugar!)
We also include a mix of dried fruit and nuts with their seed for our larger bird species such as Galahs, Cockatoos, Eclectus and Amazons.
So the next question should be what can I feed my birds and what is toxic to birds? We have put together a bit of a list of common foods which are safe to offer your birds and also a list of what foods to avoid. Feel free to share our list around to all your birdy friends
